One of the most common struggles college students face nowadays is trying to balance their very busy lives, while of course, still trying to maintain a social life.
As the college season began to draw closer, I started to feel quite overwhelmed thinking about everything that I was going to have to juggle. Between my assignments, my societal duties in MPS, and work; I was worried that I wasn’t going to be able to make time for my friends and family. And of course, myself!
As the first week of college unfolded, I quickly came to the realization that routines and to-do lists were going to be my best friends for the foreseeable future. One of my favorite parts of the day is when I get to curl up in bed with a cup of tea and make a to-do list for the next day. Writing down all my tasks really alleviates the panic that I may be forgetting multiple things I need to get done. I find it extremely helpful having a list physically written or typed out. Having a visible list allows me to recognise my limits, and prevents me from taking on too many tasks each day. There’s nothing more satisfying than ticking things off on a list throughout the day, it makes me feel like I’ve accomplished something.
As well as to-do lists, I’m also a true believer that having a daily routine will really help put your mind at ease. Having a steady routine has so many benefits, especially for us busy college students. By having a daily routine, I’ve found myself being able to make the most of each day. They help reduce stress levels, which ultimately gives you more time to relax. Creating a stabilized routine is a great way to help build positive habits, which can overall improve one’s mental health. Establishing a routine can be as simple as always leaving at least a half an hour to yourself before you go to sleep to watch some of your favorite shows.
Another really helpful idea that I’ve come across in the last few weeks is creating a boundary between work and college. Fitting work into an already jam-packed schedule can seem daunting at times, however, it can be done. I’ve realized that when I’m at work, I shouldn’t let the looming stress of college assignments add tension to my day. I have honestly been enjoying work these past few weeks, as I view it as a couple of hours where I can be relieved of any academic stress I may be under. Furthermore, I believe that it’s crucial to keep at least a day to yourself during the week. A day where you don’t go to work, and don’t put too much thought into your assignments. Self care days are needed, they’re what keeps us sane!
All things considered, busy schedules can be intimidating, and things may not always go to plan. However, your actions going forward are what matters the most. Don’t be afraid or feel guilty for creating time for yourself, and just enjoy your college experience as much as you can.
After all, college won’t last forever, so make the most of it!
