Students in Trinity College Dublin (TCD) will march to Dáil Éireann as part of a climate protest to demand for “emergency action on planetary polycrises” during the COP27 summit in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt.
The protest is also being organised by organised climate action groups such as the Climate Justice Coalition, and infamous group Extinction Rebellion, which has been designated as an extremist group in the UK by former Home Secretary Priti Patel.
The protest, which will take place this Friday, 11th November, plans to walk from Trinity College, along Grafton Street, and up to the Dáil.
The focus is said to be on the climate clock, which “shows the last 6 years to enact changes before Earth reaches a point of no return”, with Extinction Rebellion encouraging students in a Twitter post to “BRING A CLOCK WITH YOU!”.
The protest is being planned to coincide with the COP27 climate conference in Egypt, along with the COP15 UN Biodiversity Conference, which takes place in Montreal, Canada, in December.
Expected speakers include representatives from Oxfam Ireland, Fridays for Future, Extinction Rebellion, political party Solidarity-People Before Profit, and Animal Rebellion.
The protest is highlighting ten demands that the organisers want met during these summits across the next month, such as piloting “Doughnut Economics”, which is a model which shows consequences in how much needs are met in an economy, with underperforming resulting in less people having access to basic essentials, and “overshooting” causing climate change and ozone layer depletion.
They also demand the permanent display of “climate clocks on landmark buildings in all Irish cities”.
