DIY: Summer Slimming

When supplements and dieting are used in the same sentence, I automatically think of Mr. Universe contestants and their gruelling devotion to creatine, whey and protein powder. However, as part of a balanced diet and a healthy exercise plan, a little help from some supplements can go a long way.

The Health Shop is an overwhelming place, a labyrinth of specialty foods, vitamins and organic products but if the prospect of baring all on the beach this summer puts fear in you, it’s time to get acquainted.

To help slim down, apple cider vinegar, herbal teas, cranberry tablets and milk thistle boast amazing properties to aid in detoxing the body.

Apple Cider Vinegar, €2.75 for 500ml at The Health Store, is regarded as a wonder product; it helps to regulate blood pressure; reduce bad cholesterol; it clears up skin conditions and aids the body in maintaining a healthy alkaline state. Not only does it boast all these properties, it is also instrumental in a slimmer’s diet as it breaks down fats so they can be used by the body instead of stored.

Though it’s hard to resist the temptation of a warm, frothy latte, swapping your mid morning coffee for herbal tea is a move your waistline will thank you for. If you are bored of green tea, try dandelion tea; dandelion is an effective herb that aids digestion and relieves bloating and water retention. Clipper Dandelion tea retails at around €2 for 20 tea bags.

The human body is constantly being invaded by harmful toxins from the air, food and illnesses. These toxins can quickly build up and wreak havoc with metabolic functions such as digestion, metabolism and fat-burning.

Cranberry tablets, €4.85 for 50 tablets at Holland & Barrett, help to free the body of these toxins and cleanse the lymphatic system while eliminating fat. They also contain Vitamin A, C and K as well as antioxidants and minerals.

Finally, milk thistle, €16.19 for 100 tablets at Holland & Barrett, helps to protect the liver, the main detoxification organ in the body, by preventing toxins from entering liver cells and encouraging these cells to regenerate faster.

Alternatively, a freshly squeezed lemon in a mug of hot water before a meal works wonders to detox your system- just leave the tequila and salt for another time.
