DCU’s Ladies Gaelic football’s second team lifted the Lynch shield after a five point victory over St Mary’s last Thursday evening to end the season on a high.
The Dublin side were given a very stern examination by their northern counterparts particularly in the first half of the match. DCU’s captain Bronagh Farrell paid tribute to the efforts of the St Mary’s side.
‘At the beginning of the match, in fairness to St Mary’s, they really took it to us. For the first quarter we didn’t play at all but then, thank God during the second half we really put it up to them and we ended up with a good win.’
Farrell felt that her side were fortunate to have a two point lead going in to the break. ‘At half time, I don’t think we deserved to be two points up to be honest. They had an awful lot of wides but then we started to play towards the end of the first half and we sort of pulled away after that.’
The victory capped off what was a successful season for this particular Ladies football team. They won the league back in December, defeating UCD in the final.
However, things didn’t go the way of DCU come championship time, with them losing to St Pat’s and failing to reach the finals weekend.
Farrell believes that the shield final win was extra special as it was a fitting send-off for some of the players who will have graduated by this time next year.
‘This is great for some of the girls who are in their final year, to have this as their last match it was great to end on a win for them.’
In some more positive news for DCU Ladies G.A.A club three of the players from the O’Connor cup team made the College All Stars team.
Sinéad Greene was given the award for left-wing back, Laura McEneaney was given the award for Centre half forward while Ellen McCarron received the award at right corner forward.
