The seventh Seamus Heaney Lecture Series entitled “Imagining the Future” began in St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra on Monday last, with DCU President, Professor Brian MacCraith giving the first lecture.
Professor MacCraith spoke on the theme ‘Globalised, Personalised and Democratised?- Envisioning the Future of Education’.
The Seamus Heaney Lecture Series consists of seven lectures, given over seven Mondays from February 4th to May 13th. Other themes to be covered in the series include Climate Change and Sustainability; Historical Futures; Ethos and Education; Social Futures; and Children, Youth and Participation. Other speakers involved in the series include Ciaran Cuffe, Dr Dympna Devine and Dr Jones Irwin.
Seamus Heaney is one of the best known poets of his generation. He was born in Derry and Studied at Queens College before having his first book published in 1966. Heaney received the Nobel Prize for literature in 1995. He was head of the English department in Carysfort College during the 1970s. Carysfort College was a sister college of St Patrick’s College and in 2000 he agreed to lend his name to a public lecture series which would be hosted yearly by St Patrick’s College.
