When a student is in Transition Year and is planning their work experience, they would not usually look to a college for anything other than shadowing a college professor. Many would inquire in a shop, office or company.
But when it came to my turn to look for a work placement, from the 19th to the 23rd of November, I contacted the guys at DCUfm. This isn’t to say that I hadn’t contacted some of the larger stations, such as Today FM and LMFM, but the student station was always in the back of my mind.
My thinking was that I could sit in to watch the preparations and broadcasting of a few shows and get shown the ropes, but it turned into so much more. I got to join in and speak on various shows during the week, read some sport and news bulletins, be a part of preparation meetings and take part in some cool events happening around campus, which never would have happened at a big, commercial radio station.
This meant that I got a taste of not only the radio section of media, but the photography, TV and film side too. I was also fortunate enough to have my week fall at the same time as Media Week in DCU. This meant that I got to attend very interesting talks, such as those by Bryan Dobson, Ian Dempsey, Colm Hayes and Ciaran Donnelly. These were the making of the icing on the DCUfm cake. I had never realised just how much work goes into each and every day within a group like the DCUfm team. They really do have a love and a passion for what they do, and I’m glad to have been a part of it, even if it was only for one week.
