Ian Dempsey, Brian Dobson and Sean Moncrieff are just some of the speakers coming to DCU for Media Week 2012 running from 19th to 23rd November.
Tracey Smyth, Media Production Society (MPS) events officer, said the aim of the week is to give students a chance to listen and speak to media professionals and “educate, inspire and encourage” those interested in media. There will be “workshops to help develop skills while the talks then are to inspire and encourage our members to pursue their dreams of a career in the media whether it’s radio, TV, PR or film”.
Brian Dobson will launch the week on Monday followed by a talk on PR from Peter Finnegan of Communique. Tuesday is dedicated to radio and TV with radio presenters Ian Dempsey and Colm Hayes coming in as speakers. RTÉ Assistant Commissioning Editor, Factual Programmes Sarah Ryder and Rachel Towell from Tile Films will talk about commissioning programmes.
A lighting workshop will be given by photographer Jass Foley on Wednesday following a talk from IFTA award-winning director Ciaran Donnelly. Newstalk
is well represented on Thursday with speakers Sean Moncrieff and ‘Off the Ball’ show presenters.
MPS also organised a Media Week last year. This year Smyth’s aim was to get more speakers and to “make [the week] more broad so get directors, PR professionals, sports pundits and current affairs experts”. Night-time events such as the open mic night and a screening of different MPS made videos are new too.
Smyth was keen to involve other societies in Media Week so on the Tuesday evening there will be a media themed open mic night with Music Soc. The finale on Thursday night will raise funds for Movember DCU and is a night out in the NuBar with societies such as Esoc, Style Soc and RAG. The week has been organised by DCU MPS.
