Camogie team advance to league semi-final DCU 2-12 QUB 1-5

DCU’s camogie team are through to the division 1 league semi-final after a convincing 10-point win against an understrength Queen’s side at St. Clare’s on Wednesday last.

The opening exchanges of the game were fairly even with both sides threatening the opposition goal. DCU took an early lead when they were awarded a penalty and centre forward Hannah McInnerney opted to take her point.

Queen’s went ahead soon after however, after a long ball sent in rebounded off the post into the arms of the onrushing full-forward, who duly blasted the ball beyond ‘keeper Eleanor Clendennen.

The home side responded immediately; possession broke kindly to Aoife Bugler and she placed the ball past the helpless Queen’s keeper to give DCU the lead, one which they would not relinquish.

The remainder of the first half was a one-sided affair with DCU scoring four unanswered points while corner-forward Orlaith Durkan and midfielder Eimear McCarthy were a constant threat to the Queen’s defence.

DCU went in ahead at the break on a scoreline of 1-7 to 1-2 thanks to a late long-range point from McCarthy, the Dublin college more than deserving of their lead.

Queen’s, to their credit, made life difficult for DCU at the beginning of the second half, starting brightly with two unanswered points to narrow the gap to three points.

DCU had an answer for any of the questions posed by the opposition and effectively ensured victory with 10 minutes to play when Bugler found the net for the second time to give the home side an eight point lead.

In the dying minutes of the match, full back Emma Brennan landed an impressive long range free to add an extra gloss to the scoreline with DCU running out 2-12 to 1-5 winners. They now march on to the semi-final, though it is still unknown who they will meet.

DCU Scorers: Aoife Bugler (2-1), Hannah McInnerney and Aoife Kelly (0-3) each, Emma McCarthy (0-2), Orla Durkan, Lisa Cary and Emma Brennan (0-1) each.
