Review: Halcyon by Ellie Goulding

After a wait that seems a lot longer than it really was, Ellie Goulding has returned with her second studio album, Halcyon.

Halcyon is a follow up to Goulding’s 2010 album Lights which reached number 1 on the UK album charts and number 6 here in Ireland.

As an Ellie Goulding fan myself, I have been patiently waiting for this album since I heard of its release. My excitement grew once “Anything Could Happen” landed in my inbox. It’s a song I have found myself dancing and singing along to (fairly badly) ever since.

Halcyon was not at all what I was expecting – it was better. The album is an eclectic mix of well written, well sang songs. From dance inspired tracks like “Anything Could Happen” and “I Need Your Love”, to mature ballads such as “Joy” and “Explosions”, Halcyon has everything you could ask for, all delivered in classic Goulding style.

In a recent interview, Goulding described the album as “even more emotional” than her first, and she wasn’t wrong. Each song connects directly to the listener; you can find your own story in it.

Halcyon is a must listen to album, made all the better by her collaborations with artists such as Tinie Tempah and Calvin Harris. Be sure to look out for the deluxe version with extras such as “Without Your Love” and “In My City”.

If you’re not an Ellie Goulding fan at the beginning of the album, you will be by the end.
