Comprehensive Superleague wins for DCU sides

DCU Mercy moved into pole position in the Nivea Women’s Superleague following their second win of the season on Sunday last.

Regarded by most as the greatest threat to UL’s Superleague crown, DCU Mercy barely appeared to break sweat in putting Liffey Celtics to the sword. Indeed, Mercy’s second fixture of the 2012/13 season turned out to be more of a procession than a contest as the home side ran out 72-19 winners.

From the off, the warning signs were evident as Liffey Celtics were hapless in dealing with the strength and skill of Mark Ingle’s troops. Consequently, the home side cantered into a 41-11 interval lead and by the final whistle, enjoyed a massive 53-point advantage. Next up for last season’s runners-up is a home fixture against Killester on November 4.

DCU Saints were also action over the weekend and they moved up to fourth place in the Nivea Men’s Superleague table with their second win of the campaign.
Killester provided the opposition in Saturday’s local derby and the first half certainly didn’t disappoint in terms of excitement and drama. Little or nothing separated the sides early on and this was reflected in the interval scoreline, which saw the Saints enjoy a slender 35-34 lead.

That said, with Pat Glover, Martins Provisors and Mark Nagel asserting greater authority in the third-quarter, DCU began to pull away and were fifteen to the good by the end of the penultimate period, 53-38.

Though Killester shaded the fourth quarter, it was off little relevance to the overall result with the Saints cruising to victory on a final scoreline of 67-54.

Having lost to Dublin Inter in their opening fixture, DCU bounced back with a comprehensive win over Moycullen (81-60) and following Saturday’s success, the Northsiders occupy fourth place in the league table, two adrift of leaders UL Eagles.

Bord Gáis Neptune, currently languishing towards the rear of the table and without a win after their opening three games, are next up for the Saints on November 4.
