Soccer team fail to progress despite five star performance

The DCU first team finished their league campaign last week with a stunning 5-0 victory away to UCD. The result however, wasn’t sufficient to advance DCU beyond the group stages, but leaves them full of confidence ahead of the Collingwood Cup in the New Year.

Having slipped up in previous matches, DCU were almost behind after eight seconds but for a great Mark Hatton save. John Mulroy opened the scoring with a neat turn and finish inside the area and he grabbed his second following a superb Stephen Traynor through ball.

Ian Byrne made it 3-0 before two counter attacks yielded two DCU goals as David Gaul scored before winger Harry English completed the rout.

DCU’s B soccer team were on the end of a narrow defeat at the hands of Colaiste Ide ‘B’ in their clash in the College & Universities Football League. Playing against a strong wind in the first half, DCU fell behind after just three minutes.

Hesitancy at the back allowed Colaiste Ide to take the initiative and they doubled their advantage seven minutes later, again from a lack of decisiveness in the DCU defence.

Eight minutes before half time DCU got back into the game as Colaiste Ide failed to deal with a corner and centre back Dillon Butler fired in a brilliant low strike from the edge of the penalty area. Despite controlling the second half DCU failed to find the equaliser.

The DCU Freshers team faced Drogheda Institute of FE last week but were defeated 3-1. They were just one goal down at half-time but conceded two more to finish their season with a defeat. They picked up four points in their league campaign with one win and one draw from their five games.
