Following successive wins over QUB and St Mary’s, DCU’s fresher footballers qualified for the quarter final stage of the league where they meet UCD at St. Clare’s today, Wednesday (throw in 2.30 p.m).

Ross Munnelly’s charges began their campaign in fine fettle with a two point win over Queen’s University Belfast. Leitrim man Donal Wrynn opened the scoring for DCU, with impressive wing-back Conor Daly doubling their advantage soonafter.

As the half wore on Queen’s grew into the game, but three free’s courtesy of Enda O’Reilly extended the DCU lead. That lead would have been significantly reduced had it not been for a brilliant low save from goalkeeper James Farrelly

Farrelly made another fantastic save mid-way through the second half; coupled with an exhibition of tackling and blocking from the DCU defence, their lead was kept intact throughout a tense finish.

A second victory was eked out against St. Mary’s, but this one required no amount of spirit, desire and commitment.

Eamon McAndrew was proving very troublesome for the Mary’s defence early on and scored two excellent points to edge DCU 0-5 to 0-2 ahead at the break.
The second half proved to be a real tussle, as the momentum swung for either side. St. Marys kicked three long range efforts to level proceedings before a fantastic score from the left foot of Monaghan man Conor Boyle put DCU in the ascendency once more.

The home side moved in front with five minutes left on the clock, but DCU equalised through Shane Carey as the game entered injury time. Deep in stoppages Enda O’Reilly kicked the winning free.
